3 Things You Should Know About Hormonal Therapy

For those who suffer menopause or other hormone-deficiency problems, there’s a solution for you: hormonal therapy.

Hormones are essential to many of your bodily functions. It only makes sense that as hormone production decreases with age, you might begin to suffer negative consequences. Hormone therapy for women (and hormone therapy for men) gives you back your quality of life.

However, hormonal therapy does come with some caveats. Before considering hormone replacement therapy, you should know what to expect.

In this article, we’ll cover the three most important things you should know before you start hormonal therapy.

1. You Can Use Systemic or Local Hormonal Therapy

There are two main hormonal therapy solutions.

Systemic involves oral hormones or shots. These hormones go through your bloodstream to deliver the effects throughout your body. They work best for the generic symptoms of hormonal decline with age: lack of energy, mood changes, and sometimes lack of libido.

Local hormones come in the form of patches, topical creams, and the testosterone pellet implants. These are useful for focusing the effects of the hormones on a single region. Further, these patches or pellets distribute hormones over time, rather than all at once.

2. Hormonal Therapy Changes After a Hysterectomy

If you had your uterus removed, you will need a different type of therapy. If you still have your uterus, then you may need to take progesterone in addition to estrogen. This is because it reduces the risk of cancer in the uterus.

Obviously, if you no longer have a uterus, this no longer applies. You will be fine without the additional progesterone.

3. Go for Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

When it comes to hormone replacement therapy, there are two kinds of hormones: bioidentical hormones and synthetic hormones. Both of these hormones are made in a lab. However, they’re made with a different process and are not the same thing.

Bioidentical hormones consist of a molecular structure that is the same as the hormones in your body. Synthetic hormones are not the same, but your body can convert them into the hormones it needs.

Synthetic hormones work great for birth control. Used in low doses, they can prevent pregnancy without damage to the body. However, you should not use synthetic hormones for hormonal therapy.

This is because synthetic hormones are extremely taxing on the body. They can cause unpleasant side effects, and in some cases damage. Bioidentical hormone therapy avoids all these unpleasant side effects.

Speak to a Physician

This is just one article on the internet, so please only use it as advice only. Consult your physician before considering any sort of hormonal treatment. Take your health seriously.
